TMJ, the temporomandibular joint, is the joint that connects the jaw to the skull. Unfortunately, TMJ disorders (TMD) happen when problems with the muscles in the face and jaw arise.
Signs there are problems with the TMJ might include pain or tenderness, a clicking or popping sound when opening the jaw, swelling, headaches or earaches, or locked jaw.
What Happens at an Appointment
A dentist will evaluate the situation and determine what the best treatment plan would be. Treatment may include a mouth guard to be worn at night for those that clench their teeth while sleeping. Other treatment options may include a referral to a massage therapist or physiotherapist.
