At Lord Dufferin Dental Centre located in Orangeville, Ontario we offer many sedation options for patients who are fearful or anxious of the dentist, have severe gag reflexes, or need extensive dental work done.
At our practice we offer general anesthesia which involves the patient being completely unconscious, as well as IV conscious sedation where the body and mind are relaxed but you are still conscious able to respond to questions while the procedure is being completed. For these sedation options we have an anesthesiologist come to our office and assist our oral surgeon. We often use these sedation options when extracting wisdom teeth.
Both of these sedation procedures require consultations prior to the appointments to make sure the patient is physically able to undergo anesthesia. They also require someone to drive them home after having the procedures with anesthetic. Patients are not to be left unattended afterwards for the day. Most patients usually require at least a day before returning to their regular routines.
If you do not want to be put asleep, we also offer oral sedation. In this case the patient is to take an oral sedative one hour prior to the dental appointment. This will calm the patient and once they are in the chair, we can supplement the effects of the oral sedative with nitrous oxide to have you remain calm and comfortable.
Using nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is a great way to reduce anxiety and block out pain. We administer the nitrous oxide through a face mask and monitor your vital signs throughout the whole procedure and make adjustments accordingly.
If you have been holding back on having dental treatment done, please call Lord Dufferin Dental Centre in Orangeville so we can schedule you in for a consultation to discuss which sedation option works best for you!
