Air Abrasion
When Do You Us It? An air abrasion system works best on small cavities that will be filled with non-metallic materials. It's generally used to repair early tooth decay before it spreads. As well as preparing teeth for filling, air abrasion can also be used to clean away stains, prepare teeth for fissure sealing, to etch tooth surfaces in preparation for crowns or veneers and many other applications. Advantage: Air abrasion systems use a particle stream of aluminum oxide rather like a miniature sand blaster. There's no heat, no vibration, and many times it's all done without numbing your mouth. You'll feel some coolness but it won't hurt. Disadvantages: Air abrasion doesn't work for amalgam (silver) fillings, and the aluminum oxide powder can be messy. Because it uses a high-pressure air stream, there's a minor danger of injecting air into the cheeks or gums.
